Abstract

Cellulose acetate, dyeing.--Cellulose acetate in sheet, film, paper or similar form is rapidly coloured by immersion, for a period of the order of 1 minute or less, in a solution of a basic dye in a mixture of alcohol and water at a moderate temperature, the relative proportions of alcohol and water being within the range of two parts by volume of either to one part of the other. The duration of the immersion is essentially insufficient to cause warping or other damage to the material. In an example 1 part of Methyl violet 2B is pasted with an equal weight of 30 per cent acetic acid and the volume is made up to 100 parts with equal amounts by volume of industrial alcohol and water; the temperature is then adjusted to 30 DEG C. and a cellulose acetate film is coloured a deep violet shade by dipping it into or passing it through the solution for 1 minute or less. The dyestuff may be replaced by Auramine O, Acridone orange LP, Chrysoidine Y, Safranine T, Rhodamine B, Magenta P, Victoria pure blue B, New methylene blue NSS or Malachite green A crystals.
