Abstract

697,307. Carbon papers. WAGNER VERWALTUNGS-GES., G., [trading as WAGNER, G. [Firm of] ]. March 28,1951 [May 11, 1950], No. 7229/51. Class 100(iv) A method for the manufacture of carbon paper of the kind wherein the papers when in the pulp stage are treated with a dye of a colour other than black, consists of applying a non-translucent layer containing, e.g. soot which does not transfer its colour with the transfer layer which is applied over the intermediate non-translucent layer. Carbon papers with a coloured base sheet after use become translucent and are in consequence often prematurely regarded as exhausted; the intermediate layer overcomes this and consists of natural or artificial resins incorporating soot or other suitable pigments. In an example 15 parts polyvinyl acetate are dissolved in 25 parts organic solvent of medium boiling point in which is ground 10 parts of soot. The whole is then made up to 100 parts by spirits which may include a small quantity of aniline dye and tannin. When applied to the paper the solvents evaporate on heated rollers of the machine and are removed by suction. The reverse side of the paper may be waxed with a colourless wax layer, to prevent curling.
