Abstract

607,887. Coated fabrics. GROAK, V. Oct. 29, 1945, No. 28634. [Class 140] [Also in Group XVI] Stationery or other sheets having a pressure sensitive transferable coating composition on the back are prepared by applying to the whole or selected parts of the sheet an opaque setting but non-drying composition adapted to set to form a pressure sensitive layer impervious to pigmented or dye solution inks, allowing the composition to set and then applying a coating of the ink and allowing it to dry. A suitable composition for hot application is prepared as follows :-10 parts by weight of yellow carnauba wax, 10 parts of candellilla wax, 12 parts of white beeswax, 3 parts of " Mycropar A " (a waxlike polythene plastic, having a melting point of about 100‹ C.) and 9 parts of stearin are melted by heating over steam and to this is added' a mixture made by grinding together 16 parts of antimony oxide, 5 parts of titanium oxide, 18 parts of petroleum jelly. 4 parts of a light-coloured mineral oil of medium viscosity and 20 parts of liquid paraffin. The whole is ground in a mill having alternate hot and cold rollers. The coating may also consist of a composition as described above emulsified with an alcoholic solution of a resin. For cold application the following composition may be used: 6 parts of yellow carnauba wax, 6 parts of candellilla wax, 9 parts white beeswax, 10 parts of stearin and 6 parts of Russian tallow are melted over steam and to this is added a ground mixture of 6 parts of zinc stearate, 14 parts of antimony oxide, 15 parts of petroleum jelly and 30 parts of liquid paraffin. The whole is ground together and during the grinding 8 parts of xylol are added, 60 parts of this preparation and 40 parts of a high viscosity priming varnish, itself consisting of 80 parts of high viscosity varnish, 6 parts of zinc stearate and 14 parts of antimony oxide are ground in a cold mill. The ink may be a photogravure or aniline ink having a quick drying solvent and may be applied as a complete or partial covering of the transferable coating composition and may be in the form of a picture or design. In using the sheet the pressure applied, e.g., by a typewriter causes complete transfer of the corresponding inked area together with a thin layer of the transferable compound.
