Abstract

614,995. Transfers. JOHNSON, MATTHEY, & CO., Ltd., and KERRIDGE, F. E. Aug. 7, 1946, No. 23418. [Class 100(ii)] Transfers for the decoration of a heatresisting base such as glass or pottery, are prepared by applying to a transfer paper of the duplex type by the silk screen printing method a colour paste comprising a mixture of a ceramic colour or vitreous enamel incorporating a volatilizable solid and an organic medium consisting of a mixture comprising (1) a cellulose derivative, (2) a solvent for said cellulose, (3) a resin of a nature which will leave a minimum deposit of carbon during firing, (4) a wax, and (5) a plasticizer, the said volatilizable solid being insoluble in the medium. The volatilizable substance may be anthracene, oxanilide, or acetanilide, preferably about 40 per cent by weight of anthalene. The resin may be gum elemi, and the cellulose derivative ethyl cellulose, and solvents for these pine oil and amyl lactate respectively. Paraffin wax is preferably used. Example: Sixteen parts by weight of a vitreous enamel comprising a metal oxide base in a lead borosilicate flux, is mixed with 4 parts of anthracene, and to this is added 5 parts by weight of the organic medium. This medium is composed of a mixture of amyl lactate 100 parts by weight, pine oil 75 parts, gum elemi 125 parts, ethyl cellulose 30 parts. methyl abietate 80 parts, paraffin wax 10 parts. In applying the transfer to a curved surface, this is coated with a solution of gum elemi in rectified spirits of turpentine. Specifications 471,219 and 614,996 are referred to.
