Abstract

480,660. Enamelling; glazing; glass manufacture. ALLEN, L., WHITE, N. W., BOX, E. R., and JOHNSON, MATTHEY, & CO., Ltd. Oct. 18, 1937, No. 28336. Addition to 392,222. Drawings to Specification. [Class 56] Relates to the process, described in the parent Specification, for obtaining coloured effects on glass, ceramic products, enamelled iron or the like in which use is made of enamels or glazes comprising either (1) a single powder the particles of which are of uniform size and coarser than 0À02 millimetres diameter, or (2) a mixture of graded powders of one or more colours. According to the present invention, the powders are applied to a surface coated with a suitable liquid medium with which a suitable flux or a relatively infusible substance is incorporated. A suitable liquid medium is a solution of resin in turpentine, or a solution of a cellulose ester in a volatile solvent. A suitable flux for incorporabion with the liquid may consist of 75 parts of red lead, 17 parts of boric acid, and 8 parts of flint. Another consists of 75 parts of red lead, 5 parts of boric acid, and 20 parts of flint. Alternatively silica or ground flint may be incorporated with the liquid. The products known as liquid lustres, liquid gold, and similar products are also suitable for use as the medium. The liquid may be applied to transfer paper which is then coated with the enamel powder and applied to the ware in the usual way.
