Abstract

1427972 Metallizing ceramic with gold B R SMITH 7 March 1973 [8 March 1972 27 April 1972] 11129/73 Heading C7D A ceramic is metallized by coating with a powder mixture of gold and cuprous and/or cupric oxide in an organic binder free from glass frit and firing. The preferred coating composition contains 0.1-7% cuprous and/or cupric oxide, 93-99.9% gold, both based on the total oxide plus gold and 10-95% organic binder based on the total weight. Alternatively the coating composition contains 0.1-7% cuprous and/or cupric oxide, 78-99.89% gold, 0.01-15% Cdo all based on the total oxide plus gold and 10-95% organic binder based on the total weight. The copper oxide and Cdo powder are milled to < 1 micron and the gold powder is 2-5 microns. The organic binder may be beta terpinal, ethyl cellulose, pine oil or methyl cellulose the coating is applied to the ceramic e.g. Al 2 O 3 by silk screening printing, brushing or hand dipping. The firing is at 900-1063‹C for Cdo free coatings and 850-1063‹C for Cdo containing coatings. The coating has a high bond strength and lower electrical resistivity than coatings containing glass frit.
