Abstract

1402384 Glass-ceramic covered resistors WELWYN ELECTRIC Ltd 31 Aug 1973 [8 Sept 1972] 41078/73 Heading C1M [Also in Division H1] An electrical resistor comprises a ceramic support 1, a resistive element 2 in the form of a metal wire or strip, and terminals 3, the resistor being provided with an overall covering of electrically insulating glass-ceramic 4. The glassceramic preferably comprises 5-95% by weight of crystalline phase, and has a thermal expansion coefficient of 1 to 8 x 10 <SP>6</SP>/‹ C. (70-370‹ C.). The glass-ceramic preferably consists of, in weight per cent : The ceramic substate 1 may be of steatite; the resistive element 2 may be of Ni-Cr or Ni-Cu alloy; and the terminals 3 may be of Ni-Fe alloy. In forming the resistor a layer of crystallizable glass is applied to the ceramic support and wire or strip (e.g. by spraying or dipping, using an aqueous suspension of powdered glass), and fired at 600-850‹ C. for 1-120 minutes. The composition applied may comprise filler or binder, e.g. clay or methylcellulose.
