Abstract

951,987. Printing formes and processes. AFGA A.G. Nov. 15, 1961 [Nov. 16, 1960; June 29, 1961], No. 40865/61. Heading B6C. A process for making reproductions comprises heating a printing forme comprising a support coated with a relief layer containing a dyestuff having a melting or sublimation point of between 80‹ and 220‹ C. and incorporated in a binding agent (which will not soften at temperatures capable of melting or subliming the dyestuff) to temperatures above such melting &c. point, but below the softening point of the binding agent, whilst in contact with a copy sheet, whereby the dyestuff is partially transferred to the sheet, whereas the binding agent entirely remains on the support. Plasticizers and inorganic fillers may be incorporated in the coating. Suitable dyestuffs are dye bases of the triphenyhnethane series, e.g. Astra Blue base, Malachite Green, dispersion dyes e.g. Cellitone Blue G, Resoline Yellow RL, Smoke dyes, e.g. Sudan Red, Sudan Brown, Benzine soluble dyes, e.g. Benzine Blue, and oxidation dyes (fur dyes). Film-forming polymers such as carboxymethyl cellulose, an alginate, a pectin or a copolymer of maleic and acrylic acids may be used as binding agents. Several examples are described in the Specification. In one, a waterresistant paper support is covered with a mixture of 100 c.c. of carboxymethyl cellulose, 15 grams of Benzine Blue and 200 c.c. of glycerol and dried. The forme is made from this support by writing on a sheet of paper in contact with the coated surface. The coating is transferred to the rear surface of the sheet by the pressure of writing and this surface is suitable for use as a forme. The forme is then heated in contact with a sheet of paper at 150‹ to 160‹ C. for about one second, using a heated roller. About 100 copies may be made from this forme. In a further process the relief layer contains, in place of the dyestuff, an uncoloured transferable substance having a melting or sublimation point of between 80‹ and 220‹ C., capable, on subsequent treatment, of forming a visible reproduction on the copy sheet.
