PORTABLE GRINDER Filed Nov. 28, 1944 2 sheets-sheet 2 wrrgg s Patented June 4, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PORTABLE GRINDER Frank F. Spetz, Baldwin, N. Y.
Application November 28, 1944, Serial No. 565,463
This invention relates to grinding machines. More particularly to a portable grinding machine adapted to grind, bevel or polish the edges of glass, marble and similar materials.
At the present time it is the practice to use a stationary grinding machine and to place the work in the machine. In the case of glass, particularly heavy plate glass, this requires considerable labor and time.
An object of my invention is to provide a light weight portable grinder that may be readily moved about by one operator and which will be adapted to grind work resting on a flat surface such as a table.
Other objects and advantages of my device will be apparent from the accompanying description in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my grinder; Fig, 2 is a front view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view in detail.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 provide a stand l having a base II, and an upright I2. A brace l4 may be provided in order to strengthen the structure and wheels l5 may also be provided so that it might be readily moved about.
Mounted on the base II is a motor l6, and mounted on the upright I2 is a shaft I! supported by the bearings l8 and I9. Mounted on the shaft I1 is a frame 20. Also mounted on the shaft is a sleeve 22 carrying the V pulley 2| and the drum pulley 23 which are fastened together by the screws 24. A belt 25 connects the motor I6 with the V pulley 2|. The frame 20 is pivotally mounted on the shaft I! and consists of the yoke 30, a hollow shaft 3| and a solid shaft 32 telescoped within theshaft 3| against the spring 33. Slots 34 are provided in the shaft 3| and a single bolt 35 extends through the slots 34 and through the shaft 32 so that its position may be adjustably fixed.
Mounted on the shaft 32 is a handle 36 and at its outer end a yoke 31. Pivotally mounted on the 1 Claim. (Cl. 51170) yoke 31 is a drum pulley 38, mounted on the shaft 39 for rotation thereon. An abrasive belt 40 is mounted on the pulleys 23 and 38. It will be noted that the entire frame 20 may be pivoted on the shaft H as indicated in the dotted lines of Fig. 1. In operation, the work may be placed. horizontally on the table 5| and the grinder moved into position so that the belt 40 will engage the work to the desired angle. Due to the adjustable nature of the frame 20 belts of different lengths may be used and the amount of tension on the belt controlled by the use of the single bolt 35 and a spring 33 will of course tend to keep a tension on the belt 40.
Suitable switch mechanism (not shown) may be provided to control the motor Hi.
It will be appreciated that modifications of my device may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
A portable grinder including a frame mounted on wheels, a motor on said frame and an upright on said frame, a, shaft rotatably mounted at the top of said upright, a block pulley affixed to said shaft, a yoke rotatably mounted on said shaft and bridging said block pulley, a telescopically extensible arm including resilient means for extending the same, mounted on said yoke, a second yoke at the free end of said extensible arm, a shaft on said second yoke, a block pulley mount ed on said shaft, an endless abrasive belt mounted on both said block pulleys, and drive belt and pul ley means interconnecting said motor and said first shaft to impart rotary movement to said first shaft and corresponding movement to the abrasive belt, the extensible arm and yoke assembly being adapted to pivot on said first shaft substantially 360, said assembly being provided with an outwardly extending handle to readily pivot and control the same.
