Abstract

1,041,887. Printing processes. COLUMBIA RIBBON & CARBON MANUFACTURING CO. Inc. April 24, 1964, No. 17181/64. Heading B6C. [Also in Division D2] A method of chemical or hectographic printing on a copy sheet 13, provided with a superficial film 12 including a heat-meltable solid which in its melted state is a solvent for the solid material of the images 11 on a master sheet 10 carried by a drum 21, comprises contacting said images with the coating in its melted state so that a portion of the soluble material is dissolved to produce a copy of the images on the sheet 13. The coating may be heated prior to reaching the nip between the drum 21 and a roller 22 by a hot plate 15 or infra-red lamps 16 or may be heated at the nip by an electric coil 23 within the roller 22. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown), spaced images on a web are copied on to a web which is fed together with the image-supporting web between a pair of rollers. The copy sheet 13 may be paper coated with a solid alcohol such as cetyl, myristyl or stearyl, a fatty acid such as stearic, palmitic or lauric, an ester of a glycol or organic acid, or a glycol ether such as polythene glycol ether or polypropylene glycol ether. The melting point of the coating 12 is preferably between 90‹ and 150‹ F. and a wax mixed with a solvent for the image dye may be used as the coating material. The coating may include a radiationabsorbing pigment. In place of hectographic dyes, the images may be formed of gallic or tannic acid, a thiocyanate derivative such as trimethyl thiocyanate, or a sodium, potassium or ammonium salt of ferrocyanide or ferricyanide, while the coating contains a chemical such as an iron, copper, manganese, lead, silver, mercury, or nickel &c. salt which reacts therewith to form a sharp coloured image. The coating may include a humectant such as ethylene glycol or a carbowax. Impression members.-In the embodiment of Fig. 3, the impression member is formed by a felt pad 17 biased towards the roller 21 by a spring.
