Abstract

958,498. Thermographic sheets. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. May 30, 1960 [May 28,1959; March 21, 1960 No. 19062/60. Heading G2C. A method of making an image on a sheet of an unoriented polymer or an oriented polymer which has been heat set, comprises placing the sheet in contact with a graphic original and either the original or the polymeric sheet containing a material which absorbs radiant energy, exposing the assembly to radiant energy so that enough heat is generated to the temperature above the second order transition temperature of the polymer thus causing the polymeric sheet to deform in the areas corresponding to the image. In Example 1, a polystyrene sheet is placed in contact with an original having radiant-energy absorptive characters and exposed to heat to produce deformed hydraulic image areas in the hydrophobic sheet so that it may be used as a lithographic printing plate. In Example 2, a surface hydrolysed cellulose acetate sheet is exposed in contact with an original as above, the image areas becoming hydrophobic. In Example 3, a sheet of polystyrene containing infra-red absorber carbon black is placed in contact with a stencil, exposed to heat and used as printing plate as above. In Example 4, a polyester sheet having a deformed hydrophilic image areas prepared as above has catechol deposited in the image areas and is then contacted with a sheet containing a metallic soap or salt which on heating produces a coloured image. In Example 5, a solution of acetaldehyde and ammonia is applied to the image areas of a polymeric sheet as in Example 4 and used to develop a two-component dicerotype sheet by heating. In Example 6, a reducing agent is dusted on to the deformed image areas and contacted with a receptor sheet containing an oxidising agent so that on heating a coloured image is produced in the receptor sheet.
