Abstract
1,177,481. Thermographic materials and processes. GEVAERT-AGFA N. V. Jan. 9, 1967 [Jan. 11, 1966], No. 1350/66. Heading G2C. A heat-sensitive material comprises a support coated with a heat-sensitive, water-permeable interlayer comprising particles of a hydrophobic thermoplastic polymer which can be rendered water impermeable on heating and being more resistant to removal by water than the top heatsensitive layer and a water permeable heatsensitive layer of hydrophobic thermoplastic polymer particles dispersed in a hydrophilic binder which can be rendered water-impermeable on heating. The interlayer may contain a hydrophilic binder which is less water-soluble than the binder in the top heat-sensitive layer. The material may contain infrared or light-absorbing substance which generates heat. The material may be imagewise to exposed to heat or light using a flash (if a light-absorbing substance is present) so that the exposed areas become heated and waterimpermeable and the interlayer in these areas adheres to or unites with the top layer and developed by wetting the material and rubbing off the unexposed areas or transferring such areas to a receptor sheet brought into contact with the wetted material thus leaving a resist image which may be used as a printing plate and a negative image on the receptor sheet. In the examples, the interlayer comprises polyethylene particles alone or dispersed in hardened gelatine, polyethylacrylate or a vinylidene chloride copolymer and optionally silica whereas the top heat-sensitive layer comprises polyethylene particles dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol or polyvinylpyrrolidone and also containing carbon black.
