Abstract

943,992. Thermographic copying. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 19, 1959 [Oct. 20, 1958], No. 35379/59. Heading G2C. Copies of a graphic original that has a radiation absorptive pattern are made by exposing the original to a brief intensive irradiation through a heat-sensitive copying sheet in heat-conductive contact therewith, the copying sheet comprising a heat-resistant radiation-transmitting support web and a substantially completely heat-transferable radiation-transmitting visibly heat-sensitive coating thereon which upon heating is rendered radiation absorptive and readily transferable from the web on heating to a higher temperature, and thereafter placing the copy sheet in intimate heat-sensitive contact with a receptor surface and exposing them to a further brief irradiation. The copying sheet may be (1) a polyester foil or a polyvinyl chloride foil coated with a transparentizing silicone oil and then with a dispersion in acetone of ferric stearate, ethyl cellulose, triphenyl phosphate and either a polymeric reaction product of acetone and pyrogallol or tertiary butyl catechol, or (2) a polyester foil coated with a transparentizing silicone oil and then with a dispersion in acetone of silver behenate, polyethylmethacrylate, tricresylphosphate andphotocatechnic acid, while the receptor surface may be a smooth clay-loaded heavily calendered paper coated with a thin layer of polyvinyl alcohol.
