Abstract

1,266,679. Thermographic transfer processes. COLUMBIA RIBBON & CARBON MFG CO. Inc. April 17, 1970 [May 9, 1969], No. 18391/70. Heading G2C. A thermographic transfer process for producing stencils comprises exposing an assembly of an original, a transfer sheet comprising an ink permeable paper support coated with an inkimpermeable layer of an thermoplastic composition which softens without melting to a flowable condition between 200 and 500‹ F. and a receptor sheet having a heat-tackifiable coating which is in contact with the thermoplastic layer and so that the heated areas of this layer are entirely transferred to the receptor sheet to leave a stencil on the transfer sheet. The thermoplastic composition may be a vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride polymer or copolymer and may contain pigments, fillers or heat-meltable solids as in Specification 1, 204, 567. Alternatively the composition may be an acrylic polymer, polystyrene, cellulose ethers or esters, or butadiene/acrylonitrile copolymer and may contain a plasticizer. The composition is preferably applied as an aqueous dispersion. In the example, a Japanese paper support is coated with a layer of butadiene/styrene copolymer, overcoated with another butadiene/styrene copolymer layer containing salicylic acid and placed in contact with areceptor sheet coated with a layer of styrene/butadiene polymer containing clay. The assembly is imagewise exposed to heat and the heated areas of the salicylic acid layer are transferred to the receptor sheet. This layer may contain a dye so that the transferred image is a viable positive image of the original.
