Abstract

958,781. Producing reduced images thermographically. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. May 30, 1960 [May 28, 1959], No. 19129/60. Heading G2C. A method of producing a reduced image of an original comprises placing an original bearing a radiant energy absorptive image in contact with a polymeric copy sheet which has been oriented in at least one direction but not heat set exposing to radiant energy and transferring image areas from the original to the copy sheet which is then heated above the second order transition temperature to effect shrinkage of the copy sheet. Specified polymers are polyesters, polyamides, polyolefines, polyvinylidene chloride and polymethyl methacrylate. The oriented polymer sheet may be placed in contact with an original bearing volatilisable images so that on exposure the image is transferred and on further heating a reduced image is produced. The oriented polymer may be coated with a layer which darkens on heating (e.g. ferric stearate-spiroindane) and exposed with a graphic original to produce darkened image areas. This imaged polymer sheet is now used as an original and placed in contact with a further oriented polymer sheet, exposed to heat whereupon the darkened image areas transfer and is heated above the second order transition temperature to produce a reduced image on the second polymer sheet. The second polymer sheet may have a light, sensitive heat-developable diazo coating so that on contacting with the imaged polymer sheet and exposing to light, a negative latent image is produced. On heating, a developed, reduced, negative image is produced. Alternatively, the negative latent image is allowed to age in the dark, exposed and is then heated to produce a reduced positive image. The oriented polymer sheet may be opaque due to voids therein which on heating becomes transparent. Alternatively, the oriented polymer may be coated with a layer which flakes off on shrinking the polymer (e.g. a metal soap dispersion) or an opaque layer which becomes transparent on heating (e.g. mircrocrystalline soap). Specification 958,498 is referred to.
