Abstract
Dyeing of cellulose acetate is carried out from an aqueous dyebath containing (1) an acid dyestuff; (2) a lower aliphatic alcohol, an ester of an alcohol with an organic acid, or an acid which is a swelling agent for the cellulose acetate, and (3) from 1 to 6 per cent by weight of resorcinol, phloroglucinol or cyclohexanol. The primary assistant (2) is preferably present as 10 to 35 per cent by volume if an alcohol or 2 to 3.5 per cent by weight if an acid, thus, 30 per cent by volume of ethanol may be used. Alternatively, an ester may be used, e.g. butyl acetate, butyl formate, ethyl acetate and benzyl acetate. Sulphuric acid is the preferred acid. The concentration of the auxiliary assistant (3) may be 1 to 4 per cent if resorcinol or cyclohexanol or 1 to 6 per cent if phloroglucinol. The process is applicable to fabric, packaged yarn, skeins, films or sheets. In the examples: (1) cellulose acetate yarn is dyed with Brilliant Wool Blue BL in a bath containing 30 per cent of ethanol and 3 per cent of resorcinol; (2) a fabric is dyed with Orange II in a bath of sulphuric acid and resorcinol; (3) a fabric is dyed with Anthralan Red BA in the presence of resorcinol and sulphuric acid. Other dyestuffs are listed as suitable, and similar results are obtained using cyclohexanol in place of resorcinol. The dyeings are compared with those obtained under similar conditions using a mixture of acetic formic and sulphuric acids and using ethanol, both in higher concentrations and in the absence of an auxiliary assistant.
