Abstract
Cellulose ester or ether textile materials are coloured by impregnating them with a solution of an acid dye in a liquid containing a substantial proportion of a water-miscible organic liquid and which is a swelling agent for the cellulose ester or ether, and thereafter washing the impregnated material with an aqueous solution of an inorganic salt which is capable of reducing the solubility of the acid dye in water, e.g. sodium chloride or sulphate. The organic liquid is preferably ethyl alcohol of 55 to 70 per cent strength, which may contain a thiocyanate or other inorganic swelling agent and also a proportion of acetic acid or other lower aliphatic acid as described in Specification 583,349. Other organic liquids referred to are aqueous solutions of acetone, propyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol. In an example, cellulose acetate woven fabric is padded with a solution of Xylene Fast Green B in a solution containing methylated spirit, water, acetic acid and sodium or ammonium thiocyanate (the acetic acid may be omitted) and is then run from the padding mangle into a cold 20 per cent solution of sodium chloride, washed and dried.
