Abstract

Textile materials are coloured by impregnating them with a solution of an organic compound in aqueous methyl, ethyl, n-propyl or iso-propyl alcohol of at least 50 per cent strength by weight thickened with a water-soluble methyl cellulose, said organic compound being one capable of being converted to a dye on the material, and thereafter effecting such conversion of the organic compound to a dye on the material. The organic compound may be an aromatic amine capable of oxidation on the fibre to produce an aniline black type of dye, a salt of an acid sulphuric or phosphoric ester of a leuco vat dye, a diazotizable amine, an azo coupling component or a mixture of a diazotizable amine and an azo coupling component. A softening agent for cellulose acetate, e.g. an alkali metal or ammonium thiocyanate, may also be present. In examples: (1) cellulose acetate fabric is printed with a paste containing methylated spirit, methyl cellulose, ammonium thiocyanate, p - aminodiphenylamine, aniline hydrochloride, acetic acid, lactic acid, sodium chlorate, aluminium chloride solution, cerium chloride and water, dried, steamed and scraped; (2) cellulose acetate fabric is printed with a paste consisting of aniline hydrochloride, formic acid, methylated spirit, ammonium thiocyanate, methyl cellulose, sodium chlorate, cupric chloride and water, dried, steamed and then treated in a bath containing sodium dichromate and acetic acid; (3) cellulose acetate fabric is printed with a composition containing methylated spirit, ammonium thiocyanate, methyl cellulose, the sodium salt of the acid sulphuric ester of leuco dimethoxy-dibenzanthrone and sodium nitrate, steamed and developed by treatment in aqueous sulphuric acid.
