Abstract
A process for imparting colour of improved wash fastness to cellulosic textile material, comprises dyeing with a direct cotton dye, impregnating with formaldehyde, water and a catalyst, then drying and heating the impregnated cellulose. The catalyst, of which at least 0.003 moles/100 g. cellulose and a molar ratio to formaldehyde of at least 1 : 17 are used, is a metal salt of minimum water solubility 0.03 moles/1. at 20 DEG C. and pH 5 and is zinc sulphate or a Group II metal salt with a monoboric acid which would be ionised to the extent of at least 50% in normal aqueous solution at 18 DEG C. Magnesium chloride is the preferred catalyst but other suitable salts are also mentioned. Specifications 930,132 and 936,761 are referred to.
