Abstract
Filaments, threads, yarns, fabrics, and like materials made of or containing organic derivatives of cellulose are treated with a latent solvent and allowed to shrink. The latent solvents contemplated are liquids which are swelling agents but not solvents, although convertible into solvents by the addition of a small proportion of another substance such as an alcohol. Methylene chloride, ethylene chloride, chloroform, tetrachlorethane, dichlorethylene, and ethyl acetate are suitable for treating materials of cellulose esters or ethers. The yarns or fabrics may be sprayed, padded, or immersed in the shrinking agent or treated with its vapour. Local application to obtain brocade effects may be achieved by printing or spraying if desired with the use of stencils. The shrinking agent may be diluted with benzene, toluene, xylene, benzine, petrol, kerosine, carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethylene, or perchlorethylene. If alcohols are used as diluents they must not be added in such proportions as to constitute a solvent mixture. Cellulose acetate or other cellulose organic ester or ether filaments may be associated by twisting, knitting, or weaving, with filaments of cotton, regenerated cellulose, natural silk, wool, or other filaments not affected by the shrinking agent used so that upon treatment of the associated yarn or fabric, crepe, pebble, cockle, and other effects are obtained. Differential shrinkage may be obtained by applying the shrinking agent to yarns or fabrics containing cellulose esters or ethers of different types or obtained by different methods, such as dry and wet spun yarns. The shrinking effect may be utilized to reduce the tendency of knitted fabrics to ladder, of warp knitted fabrics to split, and of woven fabrics to slip. It may also be utilized to cause tensioning of umbrella fabrics on their frames. Specifications 351,999 and 356,233 are referred to.
