Abstract

Keratinous or regenerated protein fibres are contacted with an aqueous solution, suspension, or dispersion of a dye as hereinafter defined in the presence of an organic compound which is a solvent for the dye, is liquid under the conditions of dyeing and is insoluble or only slightly soluble in water, and in which the solubility of the dye in the organic compound is greater than the solubility of the dye in water. Suitable dyes are those which have hitherto been disregarded due to water insolubility but which are soluble in solvents, which satisfy the above conditions regarding organic compounds. Examples of suitable dyestuffs are acid wool, direct, chrome pre-metallised dyes and organic and inorganic pigments. Preferably the keratinous or regenerated protein fibres are impregnated with an aqueous solution or dispersion of dye containing the organic compound. Alternatively the organic compound may be present in the form of an emulsion in the aqueous solution or dispersion of dye. The aqueous solution or dispersion may contain an organic solvent miscible with both the organic compound and water e.g. acetone. The fibres may be impregnated (1) with an aqueous solution or dispersion of dye and (2) with an aqueous solution or dispersion of the organic compound successively in either order. Subsequently the fibres may be subjected to the action of steam or hot water as after treatment. In examples (1) wool slubbing and loose wool yarn (scoured or otherwise) are dyed in the presence of formic or acetic acids, benzyl alcohol, n-butyl alcohol or thymol with acid dyestuffs, (2) spun silk yarn is dyed in the presence of n-butyl alcohol with C.I. Solvent Red 7 and (3) Woollen materials are printed using pastes comprising C.I. Acid Black 58, benzyl alcohol, ferric acid and thickener.
