Abstract

Fibres are dyed by a single bath process in the presence of an agent yielding cobalt or nickel, by means of a dyestuff of the general formula YO-R1-N=N-R2-OZ in which the groups YO- and -OZ occupy positions ortho to the azo group, R1 and R2 are organic radicals, Y is an acyl group free from groups imparting solubility, Z is hydrogen or an acyl group free from groups imparting solubility, and in which a single sulphonic acid group is present in the residue -R1-N=N-R2-. In one form the dyestuff has the formula YO-R1-N=N-R3 in which R3 is the residue of a 3-methyl-5-pyrazolone free from sulphonic acid groups and bound to the azo linkage in the 4-position. The process may be applied to the dyeing of silk, leather, wool and mixed fibres of wool and regenerated cellulose, artificial fibres of casein or nylon. The dyeing is carried out in a neutral to acid bath and may be effected simultaneously with a dyeing with a non-metallizable dyestuff. Stable dyestuff preparations may be made comprising a mixture in the dry state of the dyestuff and p the agent yielding cobalt or nickel. In examples, wool is dyed from a bath containing acetic acid, sodium sulphate, cobalt acetate and (1) the dyestuff obtained by esterifying with benzoyl chloride the dyestuff 1-amino-2-oxynaphthalene - 4 - sulphonic acid-->1 - phenyl-3 - methyl - 5 - pyrazolone; (2) the dyestuff obtained by esterifying with benzoyl chloride the dyestuff 1-amino-2-oxynaphthalene-4-sulphonic acid-->3 - methyl - 5 - pyrazolone, and (3) the dyestuff obtained as in (1) in the presence also of a polyglycol ether of a fatty alcohol; (4) wool is dyed from a bath containing acetic acid, sodium sulphate, nickel sulphate and the dyestuff obtained as in (1); and (5) wool is dyed from a bath containing acetic acid, sodium sulphate, cobalt acetate and the dyestuff obtained by esterifying with benzoyl chloride the dyestuff 1 - amino - 2 - oxynaphthalene - 4 - sulphonic - acid-->2 - oxynaphthalene.
