Abstract
Complex cobalt and nickel compounds of water-insoluble azo dyes are prepared on vegetable fibres by coupling a diazorium compound of an 8-amino-quinoline on the fibre with a coupling component which couples in a position adjacent to a hydroxyl group, with the exception of the arylamides of aromatic or heterocyclic ortho-hydroxy-carboxylic acids or of acylacetic acids, the diazo and coupling components being free from carboxylic and sulphonic acid groups and treating the dyestuff so obtained with a cobalt- or nickel-yielding agent. The metal-free dye may be formed on the fibre and the dyeing subsequently treated with a metallining agent, or the coupling component applied to the fibre which is then developed in a bath containing a diazotised 8-aminoquinoline and a cobalt or nickel compound. In examples: (1) cotton fabric is padded with an alkaline paste of b -naphthol, dried and developed in a bath containing diazotised 8-amino-6-methylquinoline and nickel sulphate to give a red-violet dyeing: (2) the dye 8-amino-2-methylquinole-->b -naphthol is prepared on a cotton fabric in the usual way and then treated with a solution containing nickel sulphate to give a violet dyeing. Further dyeings are specified in a Table.
