Abstract

A chromiferous azo dyestuff, which dyes wool red-violet shades from a sulphuric acid bath and is also suitable for printing, is manufactured by treating the dyestuff 2-amino-phenol-4 : 6-disulphonic acid --> b -naphthol in substance with chromium sulphate. The treatment may be conducted in an aqueous medium in the presence or absence of an organic solvent (e.g. alcohol or pyridine), in a neutral or alkaline medium, if desired in the presence of substances capable of forming complexes (e.g. aliphatic or aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acids) or of inorganic or organic salts, under atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure, advantageously using one atom or more of chromium per molecule of dyestuff. Examples describe the preparation of the chromiferous dyestuff and the dyeing of wool therewith. Specification 310,011, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of other chroming agents (e.g. chromium acetate or fluoride) and the chroming of dyestuffs in which the naphthalene nucleus of the coupling component contains additional substituents (other than sulphonic acid groups), such as alkyl or alkoxy groups or especially halogen atoms, e.g. the dyestuffs obtained from 6- or 7-methoxy-, 5 : 8-dichloro-or 5 : 8-dibromo-2-naphthol. It is stated that the products are suitable for dyeing or printing silk, leather, staple fibres of casein, animalized cellulose artificial silk and superpolyamides. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
