Abstract

The invention comprises monoazo dyes which, in the form of the free acids, have the formula <FORM:0982479/C4-C5/1> wherein D is a benzene or naphthalene radical which contains a sulphonic acid group in ortho position to the azo group and which may be further substituted, R is hydrogen, or alkyl of up to four carbon atoms and X is hydrogen or a sulphonic acid group, provided that the dyes contain at least as many sulphonic acid groups as 6-membered carbocyclic rings. The dyes are made by treating with pyridine in aqueous medium, a compound of the formula <FORM:0982479/C4-C5/2> wherein D, R and X have the meanings above. Further substituents specified for D are chloro, methyl, methoxy, sulpho, carboxy and acetylamino. In an example, pyridine is reacted with 1 - [41 - amino - 61 - chloro - 11:31:51 - triazin - 21 - ylamino] - 7 - (o - sulphophenylazo) - 8 - naphthol-3:6-disulphonic acid. Lists of alternative starting materials are given. The dyes dye cellulose textile materials in conjunction with a treatment with an acid-binding agent. Specification 834,304 is referred to.
