Abstract

517,751. Dyeing textiles. COURTAULDS, Ltd., WHITTAKER, C. M., and WILCOCK, C. C. Aug. 11, 1938, No. 23745. [Class 15 (ii)] Vat dyes, dyeing with.-To facilitate the dyeing with vat dyestuffs of textile materials, such as cellulose acetate and wool or other animal fibres, which are deleteriously affected by caustic alkali, carbon dioxide, e.g. in the form of sodium bicarbonate, is added to the vat containing caustic soda and sodium hydrosulphite after reduction of the dyestuff to its leuco-compound has been effected, the amount added being at least sufficient to convert all the free caustic soda into sodium carbonate. In an example a vat is prepared at 60‹ C. containing Indanthrene golden yellow RK, caustic soda and sodium hydrosulphite and, when the reduction is complete, solid sodium bicarbonate is added. Skeins of cellulose acetate yarn are treated for ¥-hour in this vat at 60-70‹C., further treated for ¢-hour in an aqueous solution at 60‹C. containing sodium nitrite and sulphuric acid, washed free from acid, soaped for ¢-hour at 80‹C., hydroextracted and dried.
