Abstract
Cotton goods are dyed by impregnating them with 2 :3-oxynaphthoic-b -naphthalide by means of a short handling in a concentrated solution and then developing with a solution of a diazo compound without first centrifuging or otherwise removing the adhering liquor; when prolonged handling in a diluted liquor is employed, common salt, Glaubers salt, sodium acetate, or other salt which does not precipitate the b -naphthalide is added to the liquor. According to examples cotton yarn is handled in a bath containing the b -naphthalide, caustic soda, turkey-red oil and formaldehyde, common salt or Glaubers salt added and the yarn further handled, and after draining only, developed to red shades by means of diazotized 4-nitro-2-amino-toluene or 4-nitro-2-amino-phenetole; black shades are produced by impregnating with a more concentrated b -napthalide solution without addition of salt, followed by development with diazotized o - phenetole - azo - a - naphthylamine.
