Abstract

Printing.--Cellulosic materials are printed with insoluble dyestuffs of which the leuco compounds have affinity for cellulose with the use in the printing paste of strong alkali but little or no reducing agent and are thereafter steamed and finished as usual. In some cases the print is advantageously developed in a bath containing a reducing agent such as a ferrous or stannous salt or glucose. In examples: (1) a white cotton fabric is printed with an aqueous paste containing Cibanone blue RSN, British gum thickening and sodium hydroxide, with or without a small proportion of sodium sulphoxylate, and is then steamed for 5 minutes, passed through a solution of sodium perborate, washed, soaped at the boil and dried to obtain an intense blue print; (2) a cotton fabric is printed with an aqueous paste containing Cibanone blue G, British gum thickening, sodium hydroxide and a small proportion of sodium hydrosulphite and is dried, passed through a bath at 80 DEG C. containing ferrous sulphate, stannous chloride and tartaric acid, rinsed, passed through dilute oxalic or hydrochloric acid, rinsed, passed through a solution of sodium perborate, rinsed and soaped at the boil to obtain a fast intense blue point; (3) a white cotton fabric is printed with an aqueous paste containing the dyestuff condensation product from cyanuric chloride (1 mol.) and 1-amino-4-methoxyanthraquinone (2 mols.), British gum thickening, sodium hydroxide and a small proportion of sodium hydrosulphite and is dried, passed through a solution at 80 DEG C. of glucose, washed and soaped at the boil to obtain an orange print; the dyestuff may be replaced by Ciba red 3BN, Cibanone violet R, Cibanone yellow GN or Cibanone blue 3GF.
