Abstract
The dyeing properties of alginate fibres, e.g. of calcium, chromium or beryllium alginate fibres, are improved, especially in respect of their dyeing with direct cotton, acid and mordant dyes, by treatment, prior to the dyeing operation, with a solution in acid of the product obtained by interaction of cyanamide with formaldehyde. Advantageously, such treatment is effected in conjunction with a treatment with a solution of a copper salt to enhance the fastness of the dyeings to light. In examples: (1) calcium alginate fibres are treated for 20 minutes with an aqueous solution at 60 DEG C. containing acetic acid and a condensation product obtained by adding aqueous formaldehyde to an aqueous solution of cyanamide, making slightly alkaline with caustic soda and filtering off, washing and drying the precipitate, whereupon the treated fibres are rinsed and dyed with Chlorazol fast red K from an aqueous bath at 90 DEG C. containing common salt; (2) calcium alginate fibres are similarly treated with an addition of copper acetate to the treatment liquor, rinsed and similarly dyed with Chlorazol sky blue FF; beryllium alginate fibres are treated as in (1) and similarly dyed with Pyrazol orange G; (4) chromium alginate fibres are treated as in (1) and similarly dyed with Chlorantine fast blue GLN; (5) calcium alginate fibres are treated as in (1) and dyed with Coomassie navy blue 2RNS from an acetic acid bath; (6) beryllium alginate fibres are treated as in (1) and dyed with Elite fast red R from an acetic acid bath; (7) chromium alginate fibres are treated as in (1) and dyed as in (5); (8) calcium alginate fibres are treated as in (1), mordanted with an aqueous solution containing sodium bichromate and formic acid, washed and dyed with Alizarine red S from an acetic acid bath; (9) beryllium alginate fibres are treated as in (1) and dyed with Neolan blue 2G from a bath containing formic and tannic acids; (10) chromium alginate fibres are treated as in (1) and dyed with Alizarine red S from an acetic acid bath, with or without a preliminary mordanting as in (8).
