Abstract

Preparations of dispersed or solubilised reduced sulphurised vat dyestuffs are obtained by reducing a sulphurised vat dyestuff in a substantially neutral medium, though not below pH7, by sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate in the presence of a formaldehyde-binding agent, such as anhydrous sodium sulphite, urea or ammonia, and without addition of caustic alkali during reduction, the formaldehyde-binding agent being present in at least the amount necessary to combine with the formaldehyde capable of being liberated from the sulphoxylate. The temperature is elevated during the reduction process and only after finally cooling is caustic alkali added to the preparation. Examples are given. The preparations are employed for customary dyeing and printing processes.
