Abstract

Dyeings or prints of good wet-fastness properties are produced on cellulose and/or protein fibres by applying a water-soluble dyestuff, other than a sulphur dyestuff, which contains at least one thiosulphuric acid group, also applying, before, during or after dyeing or printing, elementary sulphur or a compound containing a thiocarbonyl or mercapto group, and finally heating or steaming. Dyestuffs of the azo, anthraquinone, vat, acridone, phenazine, dioxazine, diphenyl-methane, triphenyl-methane, nitro or phthalocyanine series may be employed and they may contain further solubilizing groups, such as sulphonic or carboxylic acid groups. Specified compounds containing thiocarbonyl or mercapto groups are thioacetamide, alkali metal alkyl-xanthogenates, thiourea, N-alkyl- or N:N1-dialkyl thioureas, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole or a metal salt thereof, dithiocarbamic acid derivatives, such as N-cycloalkyl-alkyl-ammonium dithiocarbamates, and thiuram compounds, such as dialkyl-diphenyl-thiuram-disulphides. Elementary sulphur is applied in the finely-ground or colloidal condition. The sulphur or thiocarbonyl or mercapto compounds are preferably applied in the presence of a substance which has an alkaline reaction or yields hydroxyl ions in aqueous solution, such as sodium hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate or sodium trichloroacetate. Examples are given. Specification 927,774 is referred to.
