Abstract
Natural or regenerated protein textiles are dyed with a water-soluble dyestuff, which contains at least one group -SO2-CH2-CH2-O-Y wherein Y represents the residue of a mono- or poly-basic acid, from an aqueous bath at a pH less than 7, the pH of the bath being subsequently raised by at least one unit of pH during the process. The aqueous bath contains an acid or acid salt, e.g., sulphuric, acetic, formic or phosphoric acid or sodium dihydrogen phosphate and its pH is raised by addition of an alkali, an alkaline salt or a salt which becomes alkaline on heating, e.g., sodium or potassium hydroxide or carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium acetate, sodium silicate, sodium trichloroacetate, trisodium phosphate, disodium hydrogen phosphate, barium hydroxide and lithium hydroxide. Dyeing may be effected at temperatures up to or above 100 DEG C., and the dyebath may contain the usual adjuvants such as sodium sulphate, urea and anionic or non-ionic dispersants. Dyestuffs of the azo, nitro, anthraquinone and phthalocyanine series may be employed and many such dyestuffs are specified. The Provisional Specification refers also to the use of dyestuffs containing at least group -SO2(NR)n-1-CH2-CH2-O-Y wherein R represents a hydrogen atom or substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon radical and n represents 1 or 2. Specifications 587,467, 712,037, 733,471, 768,241, 774,819, 776,265, 779,781 and 831,128 are referred to.
