Abstract

Protein fibres, such as wool, silk and those of regenerated protein, are dyed in a bath comprising an aqueous dispersion of a water-insoluble reactive dyestuff at a pH less than 7, the pH of the bath being raised to a higher value during the process by the addition of an alkali or alkaline salt such as sodium, potassium, lithium or barium hydroxide, sodium or potassium carbonate, disodium hydrogen phosphate, trisodium phosphate or sodium silicate. The bath initially contains an acid or acid salt such as sulphuric, acetic, formic or phosphoric acid or sodium di-hydrogen phosphate. Dyeing may be effected at 80 DEG -100 DEG C., or at temperatures above 100 DEG C. under pressure. The dyebath may also contain the disodium salt of methylene dinaphthalene sulphonic acid, condensates of ethylene oxide with fatty alcohols or alkylphenols and sulphonated castor oil. Specified insoluble reactive dyestuffs are of the azo, anthraquinone, phthalocyanine and nitro series containing the usual reactive groups, and many examples are given.
