Abstract
Fabrics of secondary cellulose acetate are dyed with an acid leuco compound of a vat dyestuff in the presence of 30 per cent or more of a water-soluble swelling agent at a temperature within the range 25 DEG to 60 DEG C. and for a time insufficient to cause saponification of the cellulose acetate. The vat dyestuff may be reduced under acid conditions, or may be reduced under alkaline conditions and subsequently acidified. In a modification, the fabric is padded with the acid leuco compound without the swelling agent and then padded with the swelling agent; this modification may be used where the acid leuco compound is unstable in the presence of the swelling agent. In examples: (1) Caledon Jade Green XN is vatted with caustic soda and sodium hydrosulphite in presence of a dispersing agent, ethyl alcohol is added and the solution acidified with acetic acid-the solution is then used to dye cellulose acetate fabric at 30 DEG C.; (2) Caledon Yellow Brown 3GS is similarly vatted, ethyl alcohol and ammonium thiocyanate added and the solution acidified with acetic acid-cellulose acetate is then dyed with this solution at 26 DEG C.; (3) Caledon Dark Blue GS is reduced with sodium hydrosulphite in presence of sodium dinaphthylmethane-b ,b -disulphonate and a dispersing agent, ethyl alcohol is added and a cellulose acetate-cotton fabric dyed with the solution at 30 DEG C.; (4) Caledon Red Violet 2RNS reduced under alkaline conditions is acidified, added to ethyl alcohol and padded on to a cellulose acetate-cotton fabric at 50 DEG C.; (5) cellulose acetate fabric is mechanically impregnated with the dyebath of (3); and (6) Caledon Blue CGD vatted under alkaline conditions and acidified with acetic acid is padded on to a cellulose acetate-cotton fabric at 45 DEG C. and the fabric is then run through a second padding mangle where it is impregnated with aqueous ethyl alcohol at 50-55 DEG C. Specifications 341,408, 479,867, 517,751 and 622,676 are referred to.
