Abstract

Nylon is dyed by immersing it, in the absence of a reducing agent, in an aqueous dispersion of an unreduced vat dyestuff containing a compound which acts as a swelling agent for the nylon. A dispersing agent which is active in acid solution may also be present. Suitable swelling agents are sulphuric acid, butyl alcohol, formic acid, benzoic acid, salicylic acid, dichlorhydrin and phenol. In examples: (1) nylon is entered into a bath containing Caledon Yellow GN300, fatty alcohol-ethylene oxide condensate and sulphuric acid; (2) the dyebath is replaced by one containing Caledon Yellow GN300, fatty alcohol-ethylene oxide condensate, butyl alcohol and acetic acid; (3) the dyestuff of (1) is replaced by Caledon Red Violet 2RNS; (4) the dyestuff of (1) is replaced by Caledon Yellow 5G150; and (5) the dyebath of (1) is replaced by one containing Caledon Gold Orange 3G200, fatty alcohol-ethylene oxide condensate and salicylic acid.
