Abstract

789,485. Staining wood. CHADELOID CORPORATION. Dec. 29, 1955, No. 37301/55. Class 140. A process of staining wood comprises the step of subjecting the surface of the unstained wood to the action of a solution which will react as a mordant with the dye to be used and thereafter treating the wood with a solution of a dye reactive with the said mordant to produce an insoluble dyestuff within the pores of the wood. The mordant may be an acid reacting substance or oxidizing agent or a basic reacting substance or reducing agent. The impregnated wood is treated with a dye having basic or acid properties according to whether the mordant has acidic or basic properties; or where the mordant has oxidizing or reducing properties the dye will be one which forms an insoluble dyestuff by reduction or oxidation respectively. Specified acidic and/or oxidizing mordants are sodium hypochlorite or nitric acid. Specified basic or reducing mordants are sodium hydrosulphide or stannous chloride. Suitable dyes for use with acidic or oxidizing mordants are Brilliant Green Crystals and Fuchsine G.S. Suitable dyes for use with basic or reducing mordants are Calcocid Fast Light Orange 2G and Calcocid Yellow MXXX Conc. The mordant may be applied to its wood in aqueous solution. A specified solvent for acid dyestuffs is the ethyl ether of diethylene glycol; specified solvents for basic dyestuffs are ethyl alcohol or the monoethyl ether of ethylene glycol. After impregnation with the mordant solution the wood may be rinsed with methanol.
