Abstract

Improved dyeings of vat dyestuffs on textile materials of cellulose acetate or other organic derivatives of cellulose are obtained by applying the vat dye as an aqueous dispersion of the vat acid, the dispersion also containing polyvinyl pyrrolidone, and then oxidizing the vat acid to the parent dye on the material. The dispersion may also contain a swelling agent for the cellulose derivative such as 2-butoxy-ethanol, 2-butoxyethoxy-ethanol, diacetone alcohol or triethyl phosphate. The dispersed vat acid may be maintained in the reduced state by the addition of a reducing agent, e.g. zinc or sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate or thiourea dioxide. Oxidation may be effected by hydrogen peroxide, sodium perborate or acidified sodium nitrite solution and development of the dyeing may be assisted by hot soaping and/or steaming. The process may be effected by the pad-dyeing or printing technique and the dispersion may contain thickeners such as gum tragacanth or methyl- or hydroxyethyl-cellulose. The vat acid dispersion may be made by reducing the vat dye to the soluble leuco form in an aqueous alkaline medium and then adding an acid, e.g. acetic, formic, oxalic or citric acid. Alternatively, the dye may be vatted with an aqueous reducing agent in the presence of an amine such as hexamethylene diamine, cyclohexylamine, pyrrolidine or ethylene diamine.ALSO:An aqueous dispersion for use in the dyeing of cellulose derivative textiles (see Group IV (c)) comprises a vat acid and polyvinyl pyrrolidone. Swelling agents for the cellulose derivative such as 2-butoxy-ethanol, 2-butoxyethoxy-ethanol, diacetone alcohol or triethyl phosphate, a reducing agent for the vat acid such as zinc or sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate or thiourea dioxide, and thickeners such as gum tragacanth or methyl or hydroxyethyl cellulose may also be incorporated. The dispersion may be made by reducing the vat dye to the soluble leuco form in an aqueous alkaline medium and then adding an acid, e.g. acetic, formic, oxalic or citric acid, in the presence of polyvinyl pyrrolidone. Alternatively, the dye may be vatted with an aqueous reducing agent in the presence of an amine, e.g. hexamethylene diamine, cyclohexylamine, pyrrolidine or ethylene diamine.
