Abstract

Vat dyes, dyeing with; printing.-In dyeing and printing with ester salts of leuco vat dyes by means of an oxidizing agent and a substance which yields acid when steamed on the fibre, the operation is conducted in the presence of an aromatic aminosulphonic or aminocarboxylic acid or a soluble salt thereof, which serves as an oxidizable buffer substance and prevents over-oxidation in the development of the vat dye. In examples, cotton is printed with pastes containing the sulphuric ester salts of the leuco compounds of the vat dye described in Specification 205,790, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], or of the vat dye obtained from 5 : 7-dibromisatin chloride and a -anthrol, or of leuco indigo, sodium sulphanilate or diethylaniline-m-sulphonate, diethyltartrate, monoethylglycol or ammonium sulphocyanide, tragacanth, ammonium vanadate, and sodium chlorate, and the prints are steamed, soaped and washed. Other aminosulphonic or aminocarboxylic acids, such as monoethylaniline-m- or p-sulphonic acids, mono- or di-methylaniline-m- or p-sulphonic acids, naphthylamine sulphonic acids, aminobenzoic acids or their salts, may be used as oxidizable buffer substances.
