In the process of developing dyeings and printings from ester salts of leuco vat dyes on the fibre by means of a developing bath containing an oxidizing agent other than a copper salt, a soluble sulphocyanide is added to the developing bath to protect the developed dyeing from over-oxidation. In an example, wool is dyed with the ester salt of 5 : 7 : 5<1> : 7<1>-tetrabromindigo, and developed in a bath containing ammonium sulphocyanide, potassium bichromate and sulphuric acid.
