Abstract
A process for dyeing or printing structures, especially textile fibres of polypropylene comprises applying thereto a vat dyestuff in the form of a fine dispersion from an aqueous medium and fixing thereon by the action of heat. Suitable vat dyestuffs are of the indigoid, thioindigoid and antraquinonoid series; among those specified are: 5 : 7; 51 : 71-tetrabromindigo, 2 : 1; 21 : 11-naphththioindigo 5 : 51-dichloro-7 : 71-dimethylthioindigo and dimethoxy dibenzanthrone. The polypropylene fibre to be dyed may be modified or unmodified. An emulsion of an organic solvent immiscible with water such as a high boiling hydrocarbon or o-dichlorobenzene may be included. Advantageously the vat dyestuffs are wholly or partially in the form of their sparingly soluble or insoluble acid leuco-compounds (vat acids) which may be prepared by reacting the dyestuff with a reducing agent whilst avoiding the formation of a soluble salt thereof or alternatively by precipitating the vat acid with acetic acid from an alkaline vat. The preferred goods to liquor ratio is 7 : 1 or more and dyeing by exhaustion is particularly suitable. Fixation may be achieved by raising the dye-bath temperature to above 90 DEG C. Re-oxidation and rinsing steps may be included. Examples are given.
