Abstract

Cellulose esters or ethers, dyeing; printing; aniline-black dyeing.--The penetration into fabrics made of or containing cellulose esters or ethers of substances having affinity therefor is improved by applying such substances by printing, hand-stencilling, padding or pin roll padding in conjunction with an organic liquid which is a solvent for the cellulose derivative and has a boiling point above 100 DEG C. and thereafter evaporating the solvent without steaming. Specified solvents are ethyl lactate, diacetone alcohol, diethyl tartrate, dibutyl tartrate, benzyl alcohol and the esters or ether-esters of glycols, e.g. methyl or ethyl glycol monoacetates. The process is particularly applicable for improving the penetration of (a) dispersed insoluble colours, e.g. S.R.A. colours and those sold under the registered Trade Marks "Cellitone" and "Duranol," and (b) aromatic amines suitable for the production of anilineblacks. It is also applicable in the production of coloured discharges either by oxidation or by reduction. In the treatment of a delustred fabric the solvent relustres the parts to which it is applied (cf. Specification 259,265, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.]. The printing or stencilling pastes used may contain thickeners such as gum arabic, starch, British gum, soluble cellulose ethers or cellulose esters and assistants such as glycol, diethylene glycol or ethylene thiodiglycol. The following examples are specified. (1) A fabric made of cellulose acetate yarn is printed with an aqueous paste containing a suitable dyestuff, ethylene thiodiglycol, ethyl lactate, gum arabic and colloresine, dried at 70-75 DEG C. to evaporate the ethyl lactate, washed with lukewarm water, soaped at 50 DEG C. and rinsed. (2) A fabric made of cellulose acetate yarn is printed with an aqueous paste containing Diphenyl black base, aniline, ethyl lactate, glacial acetic acid and a thickener dried rapidly at 60-70 DEG C., passed through a bath containing dilute sulphuric acid and sodium bichromate, rinsed, passed through a dilute solution of sodium carbonate, scoured in a soap bath at 80 DEG C. and washed. The dyeing is a very bright black, fast to rubbing. The subject-matter claimed in Specification 360,896 is disclaimed.
