Abstract

Cellulose acetate is dyed with a vat dyestuff by converting the dyestuff into the alkaline leuco state by means of a reducing agent and an alkali weaker than caustic alkali, applying it to the cellulose acetate from an aqueous medium which contains a liquid organic swelling agent for the cellulose acetate, and washing and soaping without intermediate drying. In a modification, the dyestuff is vatted with a reducing agent and caustic soda and all excess of caustic alkali is removed from the alkaline leuco compound, e.g. by adding sodium bicarbonate, before applying it to the cellulose acetate. The liquid organic swelling agents used are those ketones, alcohols or esters which are liquid at ordinary temperatures and have a swelling action on cellulose acetate. Fabrics made of cellulose acetate and cotton or regenerated cellulose may be dyed in solid shades or in two shades, depending on the ratio of swelling agent to water in the dyebath. In examples, cellulose acetate is dyed in a bath prepared by (1) vatting Caledon Yellow 3GS with sodium hydrosulphite and ammonia and then adding ethyl alcohol, (2) vatting Caledon Brilliant Red 3BS with sodium hydrosulphite and triethanolamine and then adding ethyl alcohol, (3) vatting Caledon Brilliant Red 3BS with sodium hydrosulphite and ammonia and adding ethyl lactate, (4) vatting Caledon Jade Green 4GP with sodium hydrosulphite and caustic soda, removing excess caustic soda with sodium becarbonate, and then adding ethyl alcohol, (5) vatting Caledon Blue RNS with sodium hydrosulphite and sodium carbonate and then adding ethyl alcohol, (7) vatting Caledon Red Violet 2RNS with sodium hydrosulphite and ammonia and then adding methyl alcohol, (8) vatting Caledon Red Violet 2RNS as in (7) and then adding diacetone alcohol, (9) vatting Caledon Brilliant Red 3BS with sodium hydrosulphite and ammonia and then adding ethyl alcohol; (6) a fabric made up of a viscose warp and acetate weft is dyed in a bath made by vatting Caledon Brilliant Orange 6RS with sodium hydrosulphite and ammonia and then adding ethyl alcohol-this colours the acetate but leaves the viscose undyed; a two-colour effect is obtained by then dyeing the viscose warp with Soledon Jade Green XS and Soledon Yellow GS and developing with sodium nitrite; and (10) acetate fabric is padded with a bath containing Caledon Blue GCP and water and subsequently passed through a bath containing sodium carbonate, sodium hydrosulphite and ethyl alcohol. Specifications 341,408, 444,953, 555,991 and 583,349 are referred to.
