Abstract

Cellulose textile materials and films are dyed or printed by applying a dyestuff, e.g., an azo or anthraquinone dyestuff, containing at least one solubilising group and at least one group of the formula: <FORM:0858184/IV (c)/1> wherein R1 and R2 each represent a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl or hydroxy alkyl group and R3 represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or carboxyl group, and also applying, before together with or after the dyestuff, an alkaline agent, and finally fixing the dyestuff by heating. Specified alkaline agents are alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxides, carbonates or bicarbonates, and secondary or tertiary alkali metal phosphates. Fixation may be effected by treatment with hot air or steam at 70 DEG -150 DEG C., although in the case of dyeing in a bath at 20 DEG -30 DEG C., fixation may be effected by merely raising the temperature of the bath. Numerous examples of dyeing are given and Example 3 describes the printing of cotton with a dyestuff paste containing urea and sodium alginate. Specified azo dyestuffs are the following:- 1- aminobenzene -4- sulphonic acid --> 1- acrylamino -3- hydroxy -6- methyl-benzene, 1- amino -2- acryloylaminobenzene -2-sulphonic acid --> 1-(3- chlorphenyl) -3- methyl-pyrazolone-(5), 1- aminobenzene -2- carboxylic acid --> 2- acryloylamino -5- hydroxynaphthalene -7- sulphonic acid, 1- amino -4- acyloyl-aminobenzene --> 2- hydroxynaphthalene -6-sulphonic acid, 1- amino-4- (b , b ,- dimethyl-acryloylamino)- benzene --> 2- hydroxynaphthalene -3, 6- disulphonic acid, 1- amino -4- acryloylaminobenzene --> 1-(phenyl -3- sulphonic acid) -3- methylpyrazolone- (5), 1- amino -4- acryloylaminobenzene --> 1-(2- chlorphenyl -5- sulphonic acid) -3- methylpyrazolone -(5), 1- amino -4-acryloylaminobenzene --> 1- benzoylamino -8-hydroxynaphthalene -4, 6- disulphonic acid or 1- amino -3- acryloylaminobenzene --> 1- acryloylamino -8- hydroxynaphthalene -3, 6- disulphonic acid. Specified anthraquinone dyestuffs are of the formulae: <FORM:0858184/IV (c)/2> Specification 858,183 is referred to.
