Abstract

Cellulosic textile materials, e.g., of cotton, linen or viscose rayon, are dyed or printed by applying an alkali, a water-soluble heterocyclic compound containing two -N=C (halogen)-groups in the ring and a dyestuff containing at least one reactive amino group (an amino group containing a hydrogen atom which is readily replaced by treatment with cyanuric chloride at 20 DEG C. in aqueous solution) and then heating or steaming. The heterocyclic compound may be applied before, together with or after the dyestuff. The alkali may be applied together with the heterocyclic compound in which case a mild alkali such as sodium bicarbonate is used. If the alkali is applied as a separate step a stronger alkali such as caustic soda, sodium carbonate or sodium metasilicate may be used. Other specified alkalis are sodium borate and trisodium phosphate. Various soluble and insoluble dyestuffs are specified. Suitable heterocyclic compounds are the condensation products of a 2 : 4 : 6-trihalogeno-pyrimidine or a cyanuric halide with an equimolecular proportion of an amino, hydroxy or mercapto compound containing solubilizing groups, and many examples are given. The heterocyclic compound may be coloured and may comprise the dyestuffs of Specifications 772,030, 774,925, 781,930, 785,120, 785,222, 805,562, 826,403, 838,335, and 838,338. The solutions, suspensions or pastes containing alkali, dyestuff and/or the heterocyclic compound may also contain migration inhibitors such as cellulose ethers, sodium chloride and sodium sulphate, solution acids such as urea or thiodiglycol, thickeners such as gum arabic, gum tragacanth, starch or sodium alginate and wetting agents. When the dyestuff or heterocyclic compound contains metal-complex-forming groups, a treatment with a metal-yielding agent may be applied. Examples of dyeing and printing are given. Specifications 794,180, 822,047, 828,353, 829,042, 836,248, 837,035, 837,985, 838,307, 838,340, 838,341, 838,342, 838,343, 838,344, 838,345, 838,511, 844,869, and 857,124 also are referred to.
