Abstract

Textile materials are coloured by treatment with a dye of formula <FORM:0917874/IV (b)/1> wherein D is the residue of a dye which contains one or two primary or secondary amino groups and which is linked to A through the nitrogen atom of the amino group or groups, -A- is -CO- or -SO2-, Y is a halogen atom, m is 1 or 2 and n is 1 or 2. The dyes are preferably applied to cellulose textile materials in conjunction with a treatment with an acid-binding agent, such as sodium carbonate, trisodium phosphate, sodium silicate, sodium or potassium hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate or sodium trichloroacetate, before, during, or after application of the dye. Woollen materials are preferably dyed in a mildly alkaline, neutral or acid dyebath. Specified dyes are those of the azo, metallised azo, phthalocyanine, nitro and anthraquinone series. In examples: (1) cotton cloth is padded successively through an aqueous solution of the trisodium salt of 6-(411-chloro-311nitrobenzenesulphon) - methylamido- 1-hydroxy-2 : 21- azonaphthalene- 1 11 : 3 : 51-trisulphonic acid and or aqueous solution of sodium chloride and caustic soda, steamed and scoured with boiling soap solution to give an orange dyeing; (2) viscose rayon cloth is padded through an aqueous solution of the trisodium salt of 6-(411-chloro-311 : 511-dinitrobenzenesulphon) methylamido- 1-hydroxy2 : 21-azonaphthalene- 11 : 3 : 51-trisulphonic acid and sodium bicarbonate, dried, steamed and scoured as in (1) to give an orange dyeing; (3) an aqueous printing paste containing the dye specified in (2), sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate and urea is applied to a cotton fabric which is then dried, steamed and scoured as in (1) to give an orange print.
