Abstract

Water-soluble dyestuffs are made by treating a water-soluble dyestuff of any class containing one or more halogen-propionyl groups bound to the dyestuff molecule directly or through an -NH- group which is directly bound to an aromatic nucleus of the dyestuff, with water or with water containing an alkaline agent in absence of a substratum to be dyed until it no longer contains a halogen atom capable of reacting with water or with water containing an alkaline agent. In examples azo, anthraquinone and dioxazine dyestuffs containing bromopropionyl or chloropropionyl are treated with water or aqueous sodium or potassium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate solution. The dyes colour wool, silk, polyamide and cellulose fibres a variety of shades, and can be fixed on cellulose fibres by a treatment with alkali.
