Abstract

The invention relates to dyestuffs comprising water-soluble coloured compounds containing at least one sulphonethyleneimide group and to processes for making them by treating a water-soluble coloured compound which contains at least one sulphonchloride group with ethylene imine, or by treating a coloured compound containing more than one sulphonchloride group with ethylene imine in the presence of water, or, in the case of azo dyes, by diazotizing an aromatic primary amine containing at least one sulphonethylenimide group and coupling the diazo compound with a coupling component containing at least one water-solubilizing group. The dyestuffs may be of the azo, anthraquinone, phthalocyanine, nitro, dioxazine, indigo and thioindigo series, and examples are given of dyestuffs of the monoazo, anthraquinone and phthalocyanine series and of the sulphonethyleneimide p derivative of the sulphonic acid of the compound of the formula <FORM:0830246/IV(c)/1> The dyestuffs dye or print vegetable and animal fibres such as cotton, linen, wool, silk and leather and artificial fibres containing primary alcoholic hydroxyl or amino groups such as viscose rayon and other regenerated celluloses and nylon in a variety of colours by usual methods or from an aqueous medium in conjunction with a prior, simultaneous or subsequent treatment with an acid-binding agent.
