Abstract

A textile printing paste containing a vat dyestuff and an alginate as a thickening agent is prepared by dissolving the alginate in water, heating the solution to 60-100 DEG C., adding potassium carbonate and maintaining the temperature at not less than 70 DEG C. for 5 to 60 minutes, after which the mixture is cooled to below 50 DEG C. and the reducing agent and dyestuff are added. The preferred reducing agent is sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate. A mixture of an alginate, e.g. sodium alginate, with starch, British gum, dextrin, tragacanth or gum arabic may be employed. Glycerol, turkey red oil and wetting agents may also be added to the alginate solution prior to the addition of potassium carbonate.
