Abstract

Cotton is dyed in a dyebath containing a dyestuff having at least one isothiouronium group in its structure and an aliphatic carboxylic acid, and there is added gradually an alkali metal salt of a weak acid. The dyestuff is finally fixed by treating the cotton in sodium carbonate solution. Suitable dyestuffs are those obtained by reacting chloromethyl derivatives of phthalocyanins or of anthraquinone dyestuffs with thiourea or a substituted thiourea. In an example, cotton yarn is added to a bath containing acetic acid and the dyestuff obtained by reacting copper tri-(chloromethyl) - phthalocyanine with tetramethylthiourea, after which sodium acetate is added in two portions, and the cotton is finally boiled in dilute sodium carbonate solution. Alternative dyestuffs are those obtained by reacting bis-(chloromethyl)-dibenzanthrone with the tetramethylthiourea and by reacting bis - (chloromethyl) - isodibenzanthrone. In a second example, cotton yarn wetted out with an aqueous solution of sulphonated oil is immersed in a dyebath containing acetic acid, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and the dyestuff obtained by reacting copper tri(chloromethyl) - phthalocyanine with tetramethylthiourea. Sodium acetate is added in portions and the cotton finally removed and boiled in dilute sodium carbonate solution. Specification 587,636 is referred to.
