Abstract

In dyeing regenerated cellulose artificial silk in the form of a wound package by treatment with an alkaline dye liquor, swelling of the artificial silk tending to reduce the permeability of the package is restricted by adding to the liquor an organic water-soluble liquid in an amount of less than 25 per cent of the volume of the liquor. Specified alkaline dye liquors are those containing naphthol coupling components, sulphur dyes and leuco vat dyes and specified organic liquids are methyl, ethyl and propyl alcohols and glycols. In examples, (1) a spun cake of regenerated cellulose artificial silk is washed free from acid and, while still wet, is dyed black by forcing through it an aqueous solution containing sulphur black and sodium sulphide with an addition of 10 per cent of methanol; (2) cops of regenerated cellulose artificial silk are pre-treated by circulating through them an aqueous solution containing the anilide of 2 : 3-hydroxynaphthoic acid, caustic soda and formalin with an addition of isopropanol and the colour is then developed by treatment with an aqueous liquor containing Fast scarlet GGS base, hydrochloric acid and sodium nitrite.
